Bedfordshire Police is urging communities across the county to join together to take a stand against domestic abuse and violence, in support of White Ribbon Day today (Monday).
White Ribbon Day marks the International Day For The Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls and kicks off 16 days of action to raise awareness of gender-based violence and domestic abuse.
In October, the force received 663 reports of domestic abuse, bringing the total of reports since the start of the year to more than 5,000.
In the last year, the force’s solved rate for domestic has increased by six per cent, as the force continues to drive the best possible outcomes for victims, and target those responsible for these behaviours.
During the 16 day period there will be enhanced operational activity, with officers carrying out additional checks on offenders around who have been handed protection orders against them. There will also be public engagements held across the county, with police joining partners to raise awareness of domestic abuse.
Detective Superintendent Emma Pitts, Head of the Bedfordshire Police Public Protection Unit, said: “Today (Monday) marks White Ribbon Day which is an important reminder to everyone around the roles they can play to support people who are suffering from domestic abuse and violence.
“On this important day, we pledge to continue to drive our work within this area, relentlessly pursuing perpetrators, enhancing support for victims and building confidence in them to report and seek help.
“The theme for this year’s White Ribbon Day is ‘It Starts with Men 'which encourages people to think about behaviours and attitudes that contribute to a fear of violence for women, and how we can identify harmful behaviour early on before it escalates.
“In Bedfordshire, we have a significant focus on early intervention and engagement which is why we have teams such as our Stalking and Harassment team, and well as some incredible Victim Engagement Officers, who aim to support and protect victims from the very first report.
“During the 16 days we will be working to inform our communities around the importance of early reporting, and highlighting the support available. It is never too early to speak out.
“We know that people are living with abuse and in fear, and whether you are experiencing abuse yourself, or you are worried for someone you know, there is always help available. No one needs to suffer in silence, please get in touch. We will be ready to listen, when you are ready to talk.”
