This November we mark Islamophobia Awareness Month, a national initiative which aims to raise awareness of hate crime directed towards Muslims.
There is no place for hate of any kind in Bedfordshire.
We understand and recognise the impact events nationally and globally will have had on the confidence of our Muslim residents, particularly during the summer when shameful disorder and unrest played out in towns and cities across the UK.
Thankfully, while we were prepared to respond during that time, such behaviour was not seen in our county, which was testament to the strong relationships and unity we have in Bedfordshire.
We believe that hate crime remains under-reported and we need to be able to understand the true picture to be able to counter it, which is why during Islamophobia Awareness Month, we are promoting reporting methods for hate crime.
It’s important you report any instance of hate crime, or hate incidents, when they occur so that we can take swift action to prevent tensions from escalating and demonstrate that we do not tolerate hate.
We have very recently undertaken a campaign of work to raise awareness and understanding of hate crime in all its forms. We have had wonderful input from schools across the county to spread the message that there is no place for hate in Bedfordshire.
We stand against Islamophobia and we stand united in support of our Muslim partners and communities.
